Two of the finest artists of their generation present Violin Sonatas by Brahms and Schumann.

The Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78, ‘Regensonate’, was composed by Johannes Brahms during the summers of 1878 and 1879 in Pörtschach am Wörthersee. It was first performed on 8 November 1879 in Bonn, by the husband and wife Robert Heckmann and Marie Heckmann-Hertig. The Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121, by Robert Schumann was completed in November 1851. Dedicated to the violinist Ferdinand David, the sonata received its first public performance from Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim on 29 October 1853 in Düsseldorf, in a concert that marked the beginning of a long term musical collaboration.

Husband and wife team András Schiff and Yuuko Shiokawa have long collaborated in music. It is fitting that they should have recorded two of the cornerstones of the classical repertoire, released on this album. The recordings were made in December 2015 (Brahms) and January 2019 (Schumann), at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano.
