Sydney, Thursday 16 November 2023
Universal Music Australia (UMA), the Australian division of Universal Music Group, the world leader in music-based entertainment, and its family of artists, labels and distributed partners were recognised at the 2023 ARIA Awards last night.
Troye Sivan (EMI Australia / Universal Music Australia) won the most awards for his single ‘Rush’, including Song of the Year (Presented by YouTube), Best Solo Artist, Engineer – Best Engineered Release (Styalz Fuego), and Producer – Best Produced Release Presented by Neumann (Styalz Fuego). These awards contribute to his impressive list of ARIA wins, now totalling six awards.
Troye’s success at the event follows one of the most incredible weeks of the young Australian’s career, earning two Grammy Award nominations (Best Pop Dance Recording and Best Music Video for ‘Rush’).
G Flip (Future Classic & Universal Music Australia) who set the stage alive with a medley of two of her hit songs ‘Good Enough’ and ‘The Worst Person Alive’, also took home two awards for Best Australia Live Act and Best Video (Kyle Caulfield).
Speaking of the incredibly talented nominees and winners, President and CEO of Universal Music Australia, Sean Warner said, “Our mission is to help our artists achieve creative and commercial success, as well as foster long-term careers, by creating opportunities, programs, and support networks for artists to tell their stories, share their identities and amplify their voices, for the enrichment of all Australians, and last night's awards ceremony is a reflection of this mission.”
The night also celebrated international acts from across the pond, with Taylor Swift beating out stiff competition to take home the gong for ‘Most Popular International Artist’. The global superstar accepted her award via a video played on the night, thanking her fans for the award and expressing how excited she was to see them as part her ‘Eras’ Tour in February 2024.
In the Best Rock Album category, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (Virgin Music Australia / Universal Music Australia), won the award for their album ‘Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushroom and Lava’.
Other highlights on the night included a touching moment, when Dermot Kennedy (Interscope Records / Island Records / Universal Music Group) presenting the Telstra ARIA Music Teacher Award to Sue Lowry of Southport Special School, Yugambeh Country, Gold Coast for her music program designed for students with unique needs to ensure they can access music education, for which she received a standing ovation from the crowd. We were also treated to an outstanding opening performance by PEACH PRC (Republic Records & Island Records Australia / Universal Music Australia) of her smash hit ‘Perfect For You’ which set the tone for an incredible evening of live performances and entertainment, which included a powerful performance of “Letter” by Meg Mac (LittleBIGMAN Records / EMI Australia / Universal Music Australia).
“As a business, we feel incredibly lucky to work with immensely talented artists, and staff members across the broad spectrum of labels and partners. Artists have never had more choice when it comes to who they partner with, or how they release their music, so the fact they’ve chosen Universal Music Group showcases the high quality of our teams across all our labels and businesses, which fills me with great pride.
“It is truly amazing to see watch the success of domestic artists continue to grow in Australia, and I look forward to 2024 to continue to be able to support our domestic artists bring their music to communities across the country and the rest of the world,” added Sean.
