“I’ve been studying this work for more than 20 years –performing and recording it has been a lifelong dream.”
So says Lang Lang of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, one of the greatest masterpieces of keyboard literature, and one of those musical Everests that a pianist seeks to climb.
In this edition, Lang Lang offers two fascinating and complementary performances: one recorded step by step in the sonic perfection of a studio space, the other played live in a single take in front of an audience at Bach’s own church, St. Thomas in Leipzig.
MORE INFORMATION
“One could discuss at length where –in the field between the exceptional and the magnificent –Lang Lang positions himself with his interpretation of the Goldberg Variations.” –Leipziger Volkszeitung
“Playing in the Thomaskirche, where Bach is buried, was unbelievably emotional for me,” Lang Lang recalls. “I’ve never felt as close to a composer as I did during that recital. The live version is very spontaneous, whereas in the studio version my playing is different – very considered and reflective. In a concert situation you experience the 100-minute work as a whole. In the studio you can focus on individual details and nuances, and of course that can affect the musical experience quite substantially.”
