Product Details
For the first time, the complete DG recordings of violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan appear on 34 CDs in an Original Jackets Collection. From 1952 (Brahms sonatas) to 1968 (Henze: Violin Concerto), the box traces 16 years of recording history by one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Schneiderhan presents an astonishingly broad repertoire from the Baroque to contemporary music: with a special focus on Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. In addition: baroque music by Vivaldi and Tartini, as well as romantic chamber music, classical modern music and accompanied vocal music with Schneiderhan's wife, the soprano Irmgard Seefried.
Numerous CD premieres, along with four previously unreleased recordings. Includes four recordings of the Beethoven Violin Concerto (Furtwängler, van Kempen, Jochum 1959 & 1962), two sonata cycles each by Beethoven and Brahms, two recordings of the Double Concerto RV 565 by Vivaldi and others invite for a fascinating comparison. A re-encounter with musical partners such as Karel Ancerl, Géza Anda, Rudolf Baumgartner, Pierre Fournier, Ferenc Fricsay, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Eugen Jochum, Wilhelm Kempff, Walter Klien, Ferdinand Leitner, Aurèle Nicolet, Hans Rosbaud, Paul Sacher, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Irmgard Seefried, Carl Seemann, János Starker and many others. A 100-page booklet with essays by Tully Potter, the Viennese music critic Walter Gürtelschmied, texts by Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and numerous photos and documents from the DG archive.
